ADC Inclusion

To mark Hate Crime Awareness Week, and Black History Month, I have arranged for The River Music Project to come and put on a multicultural music workshop for us at the Activity Park (October 21st, 6 - 8pm)

Parents are allowed to come with their YP, or if you want to attend the event as a section (with your own leader to YP ratio adhered to) then that’s fine.

The River Music Project will be bringing 10 African/Indian drums along for everyone to try, along with other some other instruments, so this is likely to be a noisy event!  Please make your members aware of this but if you do have someone who experiences noise sensitivity, then reasonable adjustments can be made in order to enable them to take part (contact me so that I can support you with this - adc.inclusion@craiscouts.org.uk)

ADC Activities

As we have come out of Lockdown so we are seeing more activities coming back to life.  In the last month or so we have seen Courses on Archery, Tomahawk Throwing and First Aid being delivered.  In the next few weeks we will see the YPST Crossbows Course and another YPST Air Rifles Course.  I have also signed up for a course that will allow us to start to deliver Air Pistol sessions at CRAI (I feel another Grant Application coming on).  Our First District Kayaking Course is starting to come together with sessions being offered in Newport – hopefully next summer will be incredibly hot and sunny but our Scouts will still get very Wet!

We have also been lucky enough to add a couple of Skills Instructors to our team, we have Ieuan Thomas – son of Shane Thomas from 3rd Newbridge who is an Archery GB Level 1 Coach and joins us to bring his Archery skills to Scouting and Robert Shawyer who is a highly experienced shooting coach and is responsible for the development of Target Sprint in Wales who brings a wealth of shooting experience to CRAI.

We have just purchased some sport Sling Shots and I will be creating a permanent range at CRAI, these things are well cool and were approved by the Scout Youth Council as one of their first actions.  We have also purchased a stack of Nerf Guns and equipment to allow us to host Nerf War Sessions at CRAI (and yes, it is allowed in PoR – ring me if you want to argue about it).

If you want a permit please feel free to reach out to me with your ask and I’ll do what I can to help make it happen – you’re never alone when it comes to activities so please don’t be scared to ask!

ADC Scouts

Hi all and I hope your all well. It’s great to see so many activity notifications coming in for groups now we are back to green.

I have been looking at the possibility of setting up a leaders skills weekend covering basic scouting skills such as map reading , pioneering, camping etc if you would be interested in this please let me know.

Plans are also underway for a scout’s pioneering camp alongside  the explorers as well as other district events.

I would like to start getting out and about again so could you make sure your meeting days and times are correct on the website please and let symon know if they need changing.

Sunday November the 7th I would like to hold a leaders meeting at 1st Sirhowy valley hut at 11am for about an hour  to hopefully discuss any other activities you would like to see run ( or your scouts would like to do ).

As always stay safe and thank you for all your doing for scouts in CRAI

Squirrels

We have been lucky enough to have been approved to have the first squirrel drey in not only CRAI and Mid Glamorgan but in Wales !!! This is still in its early stages but we are seeing numbers grow weekly.

It has been agreed that for now until we can get other groups approved if any enquiries are received for the squirrels could you pass them on to myself or to

Cerian@1stsirhowyvalley.craiscouts.org.uk

Siobhan@1stsirhowyvalley.craiscouts.org.uk

Or pass this link on please

The young people will then feedback to groups for them to continue into Beavers etc. Let’s make Scouting’s newest section successful together and show why CRAI is a great place to Scout.

Appointments Panel

As a District, we have been actively recruiting new volunteers for all groups and sections.  The Awards and Appointments panel has also been busy evaluating their processes and procedures. There is now a structured calendar in place for the appointments panel and this can be seen on the CRAI website. The CRAI Youth Council have had their inaugural meeting and will be introduced to you all at the District Awards night on Friday 12th November 2021. This awards evening gives us a chance to show our appreciation to the young people who have achieved so much during this difficult time and also recognising the volunteers who have gone above and beyond to deliver scouting.

Within your groups, if you know someone’s actions have stood out and made a huge impact on scouting, their community or for future generations then why not nominate them for an award.  Please click on this link for more information and to submit an online Award nomination form: https://www.craiscouts.org.uk/Members/AdultAwards

District Commissioner

Huge congratulations to both Linda Terrel and Yvonne Hurd who received their Silver Acorns at the recent Area AGM. Both have been loyal members at 1st Abercarn for many years. Thank you for your dedication to Abercarn and Scouting.

Don’t forget you can nominate an Adult for a special award at www.craiscouts.org.uk/members/adultawards
